Great British Bake Off bets halted by Ladbrokes
Ladbrokes has actually halted banking on BBC show the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers triggered fears the yohaig code winner's name may have been leaked.
"A run of bets" was placed for one participant, many at shops in the yohaig code Ipswich location, the bookmaker said.
It is not understood which baker prompted the flurry or whether any candidates have connections with the Suffolk town.
The first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday night.
It is the 6th series of the show, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.
Every week the amateur bakers are expected to tackle a baking challenge, with very little directions, and present a "signature meal".
'Soggy bottom'
The bookmaker stated a flurry of bets came in for among the yohaig code 12 participants whose chances started at 12/1 and were lowered to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.
"We provided prices on Monday and, nearly before the ink was dry, an uncommon number of punters remained in a rush to back just one entrant," David Williams of Ladbrokes said.
"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the same one-way traffic. That sufficed to set our alarm bells sounding and, as a preventative measure, we suspended our wagering.
"Hopefully, we'll return up with revised odds sooner instead of later, however we didn't wish to get captured with our pants took down and a soggy bottom, so we have actually decided to take a breather till we are assured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.
"When you see a run of bets like this promotion code for one contestant at the expenditure of everyone else that can be a sign to suspend betting for a bit to assess the situation," he included.
Several of the bets put were the maximum the bookmaker would consider wagers made on the show's outcome, and 90% were placed on one candidate.
The suspension would not impact bets currently put, the company stated.
